Free Online Advertising - Is It Worth the Price?

Shoot me if I use the phrase "You get what you pay for" at any point in this article. Wait! Wait! That one doesn't count.

So it should be clear to everyone that free online advertising is usually not going to be as effective as paid advertising. That hasn't really stopped people from seeking out free advertising on the Internet, or stopped advertisers from promoting it – as evidenced by the 240 million hits that showed up in a Google search of that term.

Everybody wants something for free. Some advertisers – especially on the web – feel they have no choice but to find someone who's willing to list their ad for free. This is especially true of affiliates who are starting their business with nothing more than a wing and a prayer.

It goes without saying that free advertising is usually not going to be any good (put the gun down, I didn't say that phrase!). In fact, it is usually just a ploy to get your email address or put you in a giant classified ad network that simply mixes your ad in with thousands of others from everyone who wants free advertising. The only ones who see these ads are the people who place them.

So what can a budget-conscious advertiser do? The next best alternative is affordable advertising. I don't want to use the word cheap because there is a difference.

There are many places you can advertise - directly to your target market - for way less than you might expect. Look for a service that will place your ad in front of an audience that is already interested in your product or service. That way your budget won't be wasted on uninterested visitors or unqualified traffic. 

Wherever you advertise, make sure you track your results closely. You may not be able to find free advertising, but at least you'll be able to calculate the return on your investment.
